1014 is excited to announce that Studio Aorta has been chosen as the design team for 1014’s architecture and history exhibition in October. Studio Aorta and 1014 have begun working on the exhibition, which will present the winning architectural design plans by David Chipperfield / KARO Architects / Paratus Group, along with several runners-up, from a design competition for the renovation of 1014 Fifth Ave. The exhibition will also focus on the history of the building and neighborhood, and the future of 1014’s programming.
The Call for Proposals asked designers to create a design plan that would highlight the urban context and history of the Upper East Side neighborhood, the legacy of cultural exchange at 1014 Fifth Ave., and the architectural history and future of the building. Designers were asked to demonstrate the following in their proposals:
• a creative use of the material and space to display media within the 1014 building
• a functional design that maintains space for the program events to take place
• an engaging/interesting/original concept that highlights the exhibition materials well
Studio Aorta’s innovative design concept incorporated all the above and more: with elements of their proposed exhibition design reflecting the spatial interior of 1014 Fifth Ave., their suggested use of sustainable and/or reusable materials, and their detailed plan for the project, they won over the jury.
Check 1014’s website or follow us on social media to learn more about the exhibition in October.
Congratulations to Studio Aorta, and a huge thank you to all who submitted proposals!

The New Yorker: “Beethoven for One” boldly imagines a new kind of concert
In a review for The New Yorker, critic Richard Brody describes his visit to 1014 on a cold November day as a remarkable experience: “what I got was an overwhelming new kind of concert, in some ways superior to the old one.”
He continues: “I’ve heard Beethoven performed in large and famous concert halls by some of the great quartets of the era (including the Juilliard, the Emerson, and the Takács); none came close to delivering the jagged immediacy and breathtaking intimacy of Saturday afternoon’s quartet.”
With Beethoven for One, 1014 brought live performance back to New Yorkers. A string quartet around cellist Jia Kim played all sixteen string quartets by Ludwig van Beethoven over the course of seven days. Adhering to social distancing and other pandemic safety protocols, only one person, couple, or household was allowed to listen to one movement. The short, but intense experience of live music just twelve feet away from the professional concert musicians, left the small audience stunned and sometimes in tears. With Beethoven for One, 1014 paid tribute to the maestro in the 250th year of his birth.

In this video showing part of her work at 1014, Nairy Baghramian discusses her process for creating memorable sculptures that reimagine the workings of the body. “I have a very classical way of working, a traditional way of thinking of materials,” says Baghramian. “To get the sense of the politics of the material and the shapes, I have to understand it. Looking at a piece of marble, it already creates so many questions, and so many memories.”
