On October 23rd, 2020, from 10:00 to 11:30 pm ET / 4:00 to 5:30 pm CET, the global policy network Global Solutions Initiative and 1014 are hosting a unique, youth-led event on the future of multilateralism.
Youth advocates and young voices from around the world will take part in an online debate. Amongst the young panelists are climate activists Magdalena Hess (Fridays For Future), Anima Zowmi (Youth Representative and Lead Author for UNESCO #YouthWagingPeace Guide), Radha Kulkarni (UNICEF on behalf of Young UN: Agents for Change) and Enyseh Teimory (UNA-UK and the Together First campaign).
Fabrizio Hochschild-Drummond, UN Special Advisor to the Secretary-General, will give the opening keynote. Minister of State Niels Annen of the German Federal Foreign Office, María Elena Agüero, Secretary General of the Club de Madrid, Robert Malley, CEO & President of the International Crisis Group and Ambassador Christoph Heusden, the Permanent Representative of Germany to the United Nations, will provide input statements. The event will be moderated by Ali Aslan, international TV host and journalist. The event is part of the ongoing UN global dialogue initiative, UN75, and is facilitated by the Young Global Changers, a group of young policy thinkers and innovators from around the world.
”Multilateralism is under fire, precisely when we need it most”. This 2018 statement by UN Secretary General António Guterres seems more pressing now than ever before. Guterres underlined this in his message to the Global Solutions Summit earlier this year, by stating that “now more than ever, multilateralism and coordinated international action are paramount“.
The Covid-19 pandemic, an escalating climate crisis and protracted conflicts around the world underscore the exceptional, ecological and social wellbeing. Yet, today’s global order is marked by an increased reliance on unilateralism and zero-sum calculations. Major international climate and security agreements are in jeopardy and put our planet and the future of younger generations at risk.
How can we transform the future of multilateralism? What role can and should the United Nations play? And how do younger generations envision this path? These questions will be at the heart of the debate.
