Sir David Alan Chipperfield of David Chipperfield Architects — who the German government in 2021 commissioned to renovate 1014 Fifth Avenue into a new platform for trans-Atlantic dialogue and exchange alongside New York-based KARO Architects and Paratus Group — was recently awarded the 2023 Pritzker Architecture Prize, according to the Pritzker Architecture Prize’s press release:

It’s Complicated, Is Possibly Art presents a selection of works by Elias Wessel that invert the digital space, playing with the seemingly non-corporeal, ephemeral, and magical forces tracking and shaping our experience.

This first episode, narrated by Pauline Blanchet, explores how New Yorkers are holding the city together and creating common ground despite inequalities and divisions. Guests include Claire Feuer, founder of Subway Social Club, Mitchell Borden and Rie Yamaguchi-Borden, founders of Ornithology Jazz Club in Bushwick and Brad Taylor, member of the Board of Friends of Morningside Park in Manhattan.

The year 2022 saw unprecedented geopolitical and geoeconomic shifts. True to our mission, we took up many of the global challenges and invited experts and creatives from both sides of the Atlantic to exchange ideas through collaborative conversations, performances, and exhibitions.

Thanks to its community of generous donors, 1014 participated in the global giving campaign “Giving Tuesday” and managed to raise $1,000 dollars by noon.

Amidst an era of increasing polarization, the Walter de Gruyter Foundation and 1014 launch a new transatlantic event series to take a closer look at some of the controversial terms that deepen the divides in our societies. With eight episodes over two years, Humanities for Humans strives to generate a better understanding of what the humanities are and what role they can play in today’s complex world.

1014’s annual report 2021 provides an overview of all the events that were held this past year. The year started with digital programs due to the ongoing pandemic. In the fall season, however, 1014 welcomed guests back into the beautiful townhouse at 1014 Fifth Ave. Read all about the organization and its development in the report.

British architect David Chipperfield, together with New York-based KARO architects and the Paratus Group, has been commissioned by the German government to convert the former Goethe House at 1014 Fifth Avenue in New York into a center for transatlantic encounters. An independent jury selected the Chipperfield team’s design – titled "An Open House / A Sharing House / A House as Home" – over nine other proposals in the final round.

Tom Miller, author of “Seeking New York” dedicated a blog post to 1014 Fifth Ave. in which he dives into the history of the building and its former inhabitants.
